The book, which released August 9, discusses McCurdy’s strained relationship with her abusive mother who died in 2013 as well as her career as a child actress. While the book has raised a lot of eyebrows with its title alone, McCurdy says those who look beyond the cover will understand its true meaning.

“The week before it [the book] came out, there were a couple nights where I’d just be crying on the bed because at this point there were headlines, but nobody had read the book,” she shared of those speculating the title. “For these [negative] headlines to come along, I just feel like this is not what the book is about. To me it’s so much more and more significant and there’s so many more important conversations to have than fu***** click-bait headlines.”

Once the book released, McCurdy says people were able to dive in and grasp the meaning behind it all which includes a mix of a heartbreaking past and some dark humor.

“I was struggling for a couple days, but then, very fortunately, it came out and the narrative kind of starting turning. People started connecting with it and I’m glad people gave it a chance,” she said. “As long as they read the book and got what it was about — that’s what mattered to me.”

Tune in to hear more about the book as well as the pair chat everything from the highs and lows of doing press to similarities between families, keeping secrets, recognizing a healthy relationship and much more.
