Veteran tight end Darren Fells is being released by the Texans after two seasons with the team, according to multiple media reports.
Fells entered the 2020 season as the Texans' starting tight end after signing a two-year extension with the team last offseason. But the emergence of Pharaoh Brown and Jordan Akins, along with the continued development of Kahale Warring, meant the Texans were going to have to make a decision at the position.
Brown signed a one-year, $2.2 million deal earlier in the week to return to the Texans.
Targets to Fells went down from 48 in 2019 to 28 last season, as did his number of touchdowns, from seven to four.
By releasing Fells, the Texans save $2.8 million in salary cap space. He was due $1.5 million in non-guaranteed base salary.
