(SportsRadio 610) -- With the 170th pick in the NFL Draft, the Houston Texans selected former TCU linebacker Garret Wallow.

This marks the first defensive player selected by the Texans this draft after going with offensive players in their first three picks.

The Texans traded up to pick Wallow, who was a two-time First-Team All-Big 12 selection and a team captain at TCU.

Wallow led the Big 12 with 125 tackles as a junior and finished with a team-high 18 tackles for loss. For his four-year career, Wallow recorded 295 tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, one interception, five passes defensed and three forced fumbles in 49 games.

When Wallow spoke with reporters Saturday afternoon, he said there some shock when he received the call from the Texans. Wallow was not expecting to go in that spot.

"It was really just a surreal moment, to see my mom break down and me break down as well," Wallow said. "I honestly was shocked, to be honest. I wasn't expecting to go at that pick, so it's just amazing, especially just seeing something you've been working for your whole entire life manifest and come together.

"It's just a beautiful thing and I'm ready to get started for the Texans."

Wallow (6-2, 227) projects to be a weakside linebacker in Lovie Smith's 4-3 defensive scheme. Texans analyst called Wallow "the brains" of the TCU defense.

He reunites with former college teammate Ross Blacklock, the defensive tackle who was the Texans' second-round pick in last year's draft.
