Dr. Booker received his BS degree in Education from Wingate University and his Doctorate from the University of South Carolina.
Described as an inspirational leader and a champion for children, Dr. Booker has been instrumental in a wide variety of progressive initiatives in District 7. Most notably, he led a total restructuring of our schools, a complete digital immersion, and a comprehensive capital improvement plan that has been described as bold and transformational.
He is a South Carolina Liberty Fellow (affiliate of the Aspen Global Leadership Network), a graduate of the Diversity Leaders Initiative through the Riley Institute, and the Spartanburg Regional Fellows program. He is a member of the Spartanburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Southside Lions Club, and the Spartanburg Downtown Rotary Club.
Dr. Booker serves as vice-chair of the Liberty Fellowship Board of Directors and is a past Chair of the United Way of the Piedmont. He currently serves as a board member with the Spartanburg Academic Movement (SAM), Wingate University, the Spartanburg Village Network, and the Piedmont Club.
In 2013, he was awarded the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Humanitarian Award from the Urban League of the Upstate. In 2015 he inducted into the South Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Alumnus. The same year, Dr. Booker was named SC’s Superintendent of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators and the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association.
Dr. Booker and his wife Sheryl have been married for 23 years and are the proud parents of two sons, Grant (17) and Maxwell (15).
