February 24: Lakia Downs

Lakia Downs, MSW, LISW-CP is a clinical social worker, liberated-focused healer, educator, and entrepreneur. She is the founder and owner of The Soar Firm, LLC—a private mental health practice in Greenville, SC. Lakia earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Lander University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of South Carolina. Lakia also serves as an adjunct professor at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Lakia works with individuals from many cultural backgrounds, but she has a special calling to create safe spaces for Black/African-American individuals who need support navigating intergenerational and racial trauma along with a variety of other challenges. She believes in upholding practices and perspectives that center around Black liberation and healing. Lakia is the only therapist in South Carolina to be a member of Shawna Murray-Browne’s Therapy That Liberates Community —a national community designed to decolonize and dismantle systemic and racially oppressive practices in the mental health field.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lakia embraced her role as an essential worker. She spent countless hours helping individuals navigate the mental challenges and uncertainties associated with pandemic and served on various virtual panels.

In addition to her current roles, Lakia has previously served as a board member for the South Carolina Chapter for the National Association of Social Workers. In 2019, Lakia was recognized as “Entrepreneur of the Year” by ACHI Magazine. Lakia also enjoys serving her community in a variety of ways including but not limited to: volunteering, hosting community wellness events/trainings, and providing mentorship to other social workers.

Lakia is also a proud mommy to a young son and enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.
