Legend and Common, who together won a Golden Globe and Oscar for “Glory,” the song they performed for the film Selma, met up in a New York studio this fall to reconnect and talk about what they have coming up, the strength of their bond, and more.

Bonded together by their shared experience of writing the civil rights film theme song, Common noted that with the grandiosity of the track and all that it stood for, “everything felt bigger than us at that moment.”

“I feel like every time we gave speech, it wasn’t about the normal award speech, it because I felt like we had a responsibility to represent the message of the film and to represent what that spirit meant to us," John added. "How we needed to continue the fight for justice in our lifetimes, in our moment as young people we're seeing what was going on in the world and responding to it, carrying the spirit of our ancestors with us.”

Admittedly “one of the greatest moments in my life,” for Common, being able to attend the Oscars in that way, “operating in purpose,” is something he’ll never forget.

And same goes for John, who also noted it as “truly one of the greatest moments of my life.” To be able to fulfill his “purpose,” through writing this song and using his music “to change the world… to carry the spirit of your ancestors forward, and to fight for us.”
