LISTEN NOW: Miguel talks 'simple, relatable lyrics,' the staying power of 'Sure Thing' and more
“More than anything I’m just like, wow, it’s wild," Miguel expressed. "You start to go ‘what is it?’ Because it had a moment on MySpace, it had a moment on Facebook, it had a moment on Instagram, y’know its just had moments in each one of these social media arenas and different eras… And the fact that its happened again is like…”
“I think about my favorite writers, I think about all the artists that I studied and got to listen to growing up. Great writers like Gamble and Huff and the ones who are incredibly visual like Stevie Wonder. Or like the late Bobby Caldwell with 'What You Won’t Do For Love.' 'I guess you wonder where I've been / I searched to find a love within' — simple, relatable lyrics,” Miguel noted, that stand the test of time. A formula Miguel clearly captured with “Sure Thing.”
“It’s just a tremendous like… you wake up as an artist especially with things changing so fast, and especially with music, things change. When you have songs that have you know these different moments and staying power… I’m just grateful, I’m just super grateful.”
Miguel also got into whether or not the recent resurgence of the 2010 track will have any effect on the music he’s working on now, and why it's been a minute since we’ve heard something new from him. To hear it all, listen to the entire conversation above.
