"Our school's band has been using marching drums from the very early 1980s, and we've been looking into a new drumline for a few years now. We've taken very good care of these drums and they've lasted us the past 40 years, which is FAR past the normal useable lifetime of any drumline or really any instrument for that matter, but as they're constantly being used all year long and used every marching season, they're becoming too difficult to maintain now, as parts are constantly breaking from age and high tension, drums are sagging and the integrity of drum harnesses are just about at their breaking points. The cost of a new drumline is about $19,000 to $20,000 and it's been quite difficult for my director and I to get approved by our school board the past 2 and a half years, but with a $15,000 head-start, and only a few thousand needed to make up the rest, it should be much easier to obtain a new drumline before our current one leaves us with a marching season without a functioning drumline." - Simon Walrod
"The Eudora High School and Eudora Middle School track teams would like to request the “Facilities Enrichment Grant” to improve their discus “throwing area” that is used for track meets, track practice, and off-season workouts at Eudora High School. With a tremendous growth in our school’s attendance in recent years, Eudora now has over 65 “throwers” sharing our two ring discus throwing area each day at practice. As you can imagine, these athlete’s get to throw once and then go to the back of a long line. So any feedback from their coach is often forgotten or left ineffective due to the lon g wait in between throws. Our discus student athletes and our coaches have designed a new, safer and more effective discus throwing area that we will use the Facilities Enrichment Grant and community funds to build. This new area would include two upgraded competition discus rings along with four additional practice discus rings. The new competition rings will feature a new concrete pad and the new NFHS recommended safety netting to allow our throwers to practice their throws with greater repetition and safety. The four practice rings will allow our coaches to work with our discus throwers individually on their form and technique. This type of set-up will allow for our throwers to get more quality practice repetitions in and allow for a new, safe environment for all. With the additional space, this new area will be incorporated into our off-season training sessions to ensure that it is used throughout the year. While the final cost of this project is estimated to be approximately $19,211, our school administration and community is committed to ensuring that this project is completed if we are able to partner with the Facilities Enrichment Grant. We have already had a community member who has committed to donating the additional funding needed to complete this project with our Eudora School Board and administration. We appreciate your time and consideration of our student athlete led grant request to help our track teams at Eudora High School and Eudora Middle School." - Cara Kimberlin, Athletic Director
