(610 Sports) – Heading into the 2022 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs biggest needs looked to be high-level edge rusher, a playmaking wide receiver and defensive back. Following a stretch in which six wide receivers drafted between picks 8 and 18, the focus became a difference maker on defense.
Set to pick at 29 and 30, the Chiefs opted to trade up to pick 21 and selected University of Washington corner back Trent McDuffie who seemed to slip a bit based on most projections.
McDuffie, known as an elite competitor, fills a real position of need for Kansas City, who saw both Charvarious Ward and Mike Hughes leave to free-agency.
The Chiefs are getting a versatile defensive back in McDuffie, a pesky press-man defender with the ability to excel in zone coverage. He can also play outside or from the slot and carries a very high floor with the potential to become one of the league's top corners at some point during his first contract.
In trading up to to select McDuffie, the Chiefs swapped first-round picks with the New England Patriots, sending New England pick 29, along with picks 94 and 121. The Chiefs are set to pick again at 30.
