JuJu Smith-Schuster: "It came down to Patrick Mahomes"

(610 Sports) – After turning down an offer to come to Kansas City last offseason, JuJu Smith-Schuster wasn't about to miss another opportunity to play with Patrick Mahomes in Andy Reid's offense.

Opting to stay in Pittsburgh and play with Ben Rothlisberger during his final season isn't a decision Smith-Schuster regrets, but the opportunity to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes, alongside Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and Mecole Hardman in Kansas City, was hard to turn down.

"It was a big part of the process," said Smith-Schuster. "You go into free agency and you find out who is going to be throwing you the ball next year. It came down to [Patrick Mahomes]. I'm excited. I'm happy with my decision."

Despite his disappointing 2021 season in which he missed all but 5 games with a shoulder injury, Smith-Schuster doesn't regret choosing to stay in Pittsburgh on a one-year deal and says he wouldn't do anything differently.

"I have no regrets on my decision last year."

The sixth-year pro will look to rebuild his market value in 2022 as part of the Chiefs high-flying offense. With Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce drawing much of the attention from defensive backfields, Smith-Schuster will have plenty of opportunities to return to his 2018 Pro Bowl form and earn a multi-year deal next offseason.
