The Kansas City Chiefs are without question one of the top teams in the AFC, but they’ve danced with danger a bit recently.
Each of the last two games the Chiefs have put themselves in a precarious position, despite walking away with wins in both. They nearly blew a 27-point lead to the woeful Denver Broncos in Week 14, only to get taken to overtime by the worst team in the league, the Texans, on Sunday.
Walking away with wins has helped take some of the heat off the Chiefs, but those close calls aren’t sustainable – especially once they get into postseason play with markedly better competition.
But Patrick Mahomes is finding at least one positive in it all.
“You want to continue to get better and win these games by a bit of a bigger margin, but I think the only good that you can take from it is that we know how to win these tough-fought games," Mahomes said Tuesday in his weekly appearance on "The Drive." "In the playoffs that’s how all the games are going to be, that even when we don’t have our best stuff on that day we’re able to find a way to win.
“Hopefully we can get some momentum going into the playoffs and maybe play a little better as far as the turnovers go, keeping away from those, I think that’s the only thing that’s really hurting us. Other than that I think guys are playing hard and they’re finding a way to win at the end of the day.”
The Chiefs will finish the regular season slate with games against the Seahawks, Broncos and Raiders. The Chiefs only beat Las Vegas by one earlier in the year, Denver was a handful for them and the Seahawks are desperately fighting for a playoff spot.
If the Chiefs don’t fix some of the issues that have hurt them the last two weeks, they might well end up getting exposed again.
