Patrick Mahomes thinks Rashee Rice is just getting started

After finding themselves facing a surprising 14-point deficit in their Week 12 victory over the Raiders, the Chiefs woke up and scored 31 of the game's final 34 points.

Central to that dominance on the offensive side of the ball was rookie wide receiver Rashee Rice, who notched his first career 100-yard game.

Rice has been percolating in a deep and seemingly muddled receiving corps all season, but against the Raiders he led the group in snaps, targets, catches and receiving yards.

It seemed like Rice was establishing himself atop the pecking order before our very eyes.

For Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Rice's performance may have only been a glimpse of what the second-round draft pick is capable of.

"I think he can do even more than what we've been able to get out of him so far," Mahomes told host Carrington Harrison during his weekly appearance on "The Drive" on 610 Sports Radio in Kansas City.

"He's able to catch the ball down the field, he's able to run the routes that all the best receivers in the NFL do. All you can do is just keep building on him and try to do whatever you can to put him in the right opportunities to make plays happen. Obviously we've seen how explosive he is with the football in his hands, but I think you can see that in the routes that he runs and the physicality that he catches the football."

But according to Mahomes, Rice's step forward is just the result of preparation and making the most of an opportunity, rather than any difference in game plan or snap count.

"I think guys have been ready to go all year. I think at the end of the day, we just executed at a higher level. Guys stepped up, whenever they got more snaps and made plays happen, but I think you've seen over the career that I've had with Coach Reid, a lot of guys have stepped up in big moments. And Rashee did a great job of that last week. And we're going to continue to build. We're going to utilize guys to their strengths, and try to go out there and win football games in whatever way possible, and I thought guys did that this past weekend."

The offensive outburst in Las Vegas felt like a turning point, of sorts, amid a season marked by starts and fits on that side of the ball.

For his part, Mahomes is optimistic that the unit has found another gear, but he's not yet taking it for granted.

"You hope it is, but at the same time, we've had some good spurts throughout the season. So all you can do is just continue to work at it, not get too big of a head, just focus on how you can get better this week, knowing that we're going to Green Bay to play a really good football team that's playing really good football right now, and we're going to have to play our best football to win.

"And so I think you hope it's a turning point, but at the same time it's got to come with the work that you put in throughout the week, and hopefully if you can keep building on the fundamentals, then you go out there and execute, put up points on the board and win some football games."
