The Indianapolis Colts closed as a 5-point favorite over the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. It was the fourth straight Super Bowl with a line of at least five points and the 31st in 44 total games. There hasn’t been a Super Bowl spread of at least five points since then.
When the Kansas City Chiefs opened as a 1.5-point favorite over the Philadelphia Eagles in BetMGM’s odds for Super Bowl LIX, it was all but guaranteed to be the 15th straight game with a closing spread of five points or fewer. And if there isn’t movement of at least one point in the Chiefs’ direction, it’ll be the third straight game at two points or fewer.
Before the Super Bowl closed at two points (49ers -2) last year, there had never been consecutive Super Bowls with a spread of two or fewer.
During the 15-year streak of sub-five spreads, the average spread has been 2.9 points. It was 8.2 in the 15 years prior and 7.8 through the first 44 Super Bowls. Only two of those games closed with a spread of two points or fewer.
