The Chiefs and safety Tryann Mathieu are at a crossroads this offseason, with the latter set to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins in March. Mathieu has long been a staple in the Chiefs' defense, but it's been reported that Mathieu -- who turns 30 in May -- may find a better deal on the open market. While speaking to reporters at the NFL Combine on Tuesday afternoon, Chiefs GM Brett Veach spoke about where both sides currently stand.
"After the Cincinnati game, we had a chance to talk," Veach said. "We communicated that we certainly love Tyrann and Tyrann loves being here. This is actually the start of that process now. Once the season ends, the coaches kind of do their deal, and we sit back and we collect all the information, and we get with the coaches after they do their scheme evaluations. We know that once Indy rolls around, we'll have a chance to see all the great college prospects, but on the other hand, have an opportunity to talk to our player's agents and exchange information. So we'll start that process this week and hopefully everything ends in a positive direction."
