It took until overtime but the Chiefs got past the lowly Texans in Houston on Sunday afternoon. Despite trailing 21-16 entering the fourth quarter, Kansas City prevailed in overtime for another close – some may say too close – win over an inferior team.
The Chiefs also won by only six points last week with a 34-28 victory in Denver. These two close calls against bad teams came after Kansas City’s loss in Cincinnati to start the month.
It’s been a dicey December for the Chiefs, but now they get a chance to return home as big favorites against the Seahawks and Broncos in the coming weeks. Can they finish out the season strong?
Cody Tapp and Kayla Knierim of the Audacy Original Podcast “It’s Always Gameday In Kansas City” talked about the Chiefs’ recent play and questioned if they can still win out in the final three weeks of the season.
“Yes, yes I still think they’re winning their schedule out,” Tapp said (1:52 in player above). “Because I still think they’re definitively better than all three of these teams.”
The Chiefs should win out the rest of the way. They opened as 10-point favorites against the Seahawks and will likely be even bigger favorites against the Broncos.
Unless the Raiders have something to play for in Week 18 – or even if they don’t –, the Chiefs should win that one as well, especially if they need to lock up the top seed.
“If it’s in a must-win game against the Raiders, I think the Chiefs are still winning out, even though they’re playing bad football,” Tapp continued. “I still think after all this they’re going to finish 14-3.”
The Chiefs’ most recent losses were against the Bengals and Bills, but they also lost to the Colts back in Week 3, so they can’t overlook any of their opponents.
“Right there with you, even though today when it goes to overtime I’m thinking are we really going to lose to the best two teams in the AFC and the worst two teams? Is that what we’re going to do here? But luckily we didn’t,” Knierim said. “That didn’t happen so we didn’t have to worry about that. Yes, I have been confident in saying we’re going to win out but they sure keep it close.”
The Chiefs and Bills are tied atop the AFC at 11-3 but Buffalo has the tiebreaker due to the head-to-head win. However, Buffalo still has to face the Bengals in Cincinnati in Week 17. That could open the door for Kansas City to earn the top spot in the conference.
