Bobby Witt Jr.'s been on a lot of people's radar for a very long time already. Widely considered the best prospect in Minor League baseball, Witt was also an accomplished high school player, winning the Gatorade Athlete of the Year award his senior season. But perhaps no one's been able to watch his rise closer than his dad -- and former MLB'er himself -- Bobby Witt Sr. Speaking to 610's Fescoe In The Morning on the day of Jr.'s debut, Witt revealed the moment that he knew his son was one of the best young players in the country.
"I would say probably his sophomore year of high school," he said. "After that year, he went out and started playing in a bunch of these events, whether it was Perfect Game, Under Armor, All-American Game. Seeing him compete against guys that were projected to be first-round guys. All of a sudden he's out there performing as well as them, so you start thinking that maybe he's got a shot to go pretty good in the draft. But then after he was selected where he was, and he went out and started playing, and again, when he went out there and performed, especially with what he did last year -- and I think at the alternate site -- I think that's when things started to trend more towards possibly being a big-leaguer."
