(610 Sports) – Lost in the excitement of Bobby Witt Jr.'s debut for the Kansas City Royals' and the team's 3-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Opening Day, was the return of starting pitcher Zack Greinke, who allowed just one-run over 5.2 innings.

Greinke was drafted by the Royals in the first-round of the 2002 MLB Amateur Draft and spent seven seasons in Kansas City before being dealt to the Milwaukee Brewers in December, 2010.

Joining 610 Sports' Cody & Gold, on Friday, Royals' right-fielder Whit Merrifield shared what he thought the veteran right-hander brought to the team and what he hoped would rub off on the team's bevy of young pitchers.

"I think what Zack does is very rare, the way he's able to execute his craft and the way he's able to go about it, not everyone's able to do it," said Merrifield. "I think a big thing that he brings to the table that's going to rub off on our guys, is that this guy just gets ahead and pounds the zone and he's not afraid to go at guys and he does it in a multitude of different ways but he's going after guys. He's throwing strike one, he's working quickly, he's not falling behind, he's not giving people free bases and that's something we struggle with as a staff."
