Adalberto Mondesí's Royals debut couldn't have gone much better, with the shortstop going 2-4 with two doubles in a 2-1 win over a Tampa Bay team that had won 11 straight. The next morning, manager Mike Matheny called into 610's Fescoe In The Morning to give his review, and explain what he saw from the Mondesí on night one.
"We didn't really know [what to expect] either," he said. "You get some reports, some video, but it's major league pitching. You've seen it how many times: guys go in just killing Triple-A come here and see a guy like Rich Hill last night -- he had his good stuff going -- so you don't know how it's going to play out.
"You look at that that second double that he hit, he gets down 0-2 swinging at a couple bad pitches, you're thinking, 'All right, he might just still be off a little bit,' and then he lays off a couple, fouls a couple off his foot, and then just uses his hands. What I see now is a short stroke ... he's trusting himself, trusting his hands and not trying to do to much. When he does that and his natural athleticism takes over, it's fun to watch."
