Kansas City Royals: Would trading for Cubs' Kris Bryant be a good idea?

Cody and Gold went deep into the debate on Thursday afternoon.

It seems like Kris Bryant's days as a Chicago Cub are numbered. Despite Chicago's recent and impressive three-game sweep over the Dodgers, rumors of a Bryant trade have swirled for years now, and league insiders seem more convinced than ever that he won't be on the North Side too much longer. Does that mean the Royals should make a move? Bryant, who was recently named NL Player of the Week, is currently hitting .308/.395/.673 with a 1.068 OPS - his wRC+ (180!) and wOBA (.444) are significantly better than anyone currently on the Royals' roster. On Thursday morning's episode of Cody and Gold, the two broke a possible trade down.

"The issue I have is the position," Cody said. "He plays third, he plays outfield. Where are we thinking Kris Bryant lands, I guess is the question. And then who gets moved off their spot as a result of it? Michael A. Taylor's not hitting nearly as well as he did in the early part of the season, as we well know. But are you putting Whit [Merrifield] in center for a playoff run? ... Do you just put him in right, and then Whit goes to second, and then Nicky [Lopez] goes to the bench?"

"If you really felt like you have to add another bat at some point, that guy is Bobby Witt Jr., right?" Gold added. "I understand Kris Bryant won an MVP and is far more established and has proven more in the big leagues. I get it. But in 2021, knowing what the expectation was ... is this the year you want to trade away, essentially for him, some pitching prospects to make it happen? I don't know if this is the year I'd want to do that."
