Whit Merrifield: Royals "just have to keep showing up ready to work"

The vet conceded that last week "obviously didn't go very well at all."

May hasn't been kind to the Royals. It only took a week for the team to lose their grip on first place in the AL Central, not to mention an above-.500 record, after eight straight losses to division opponents - the last seven of which came at home. As the team uses Monday's off day to try and right the ship, Whit Merrifield called into 610's Cody and Gold for his weekly radio appearance. When asked about the team's struggles, Merrifield didn't hold back:

“It was a tough week. We were excited going into the homestand about what we did on the road trip, and coming back home and getting to play two teams in our division," he said. "Obviously didn’t go very well at all. It’s such a long season, and I know that’s getting said a lot, but it really is such a long season that you go through all sorts of things, ups and downs. Just look at what the Dodgers are going through right now. Sometimes you really have to remind yourself that. It’s hard to understand while you’re going through it what the big picture is, but guys just have to keep showing up ready to work, prepare for the game, and then go out and trust your preparation.

"Just play hard, play to win, and when the game’s over, look at it, analyze how you did, be a good self-evaluator, and then learn from it and move forward. Because once it’s done, it’s done and there’s no reason to sit back and sulk on what happened.”
