April is the #MonthOfTheMilitaryChild and I am proud to say I grew up an Air Force BRAT (born, raised and transferred). Had the honor of virtually hanging with Travis Stevens' (formerly a teacher at John Wallace Middle School in Newington who grew up listening to 96.5 TIC) senior class at Yokosuka Navy base last night.

The students asked me some awesome questions. They are clearly so smart and curious and ready to transition to civilian life — however they’ve been overseas for a long time so these students are going to find themselves in a bit of a culture shock. I know I had that same culture shock when I started college after nearly 18 years overseas. But they have so many qualities that gives them an edge in life. They are worldly and cultured and unafraid to try new things. They speak multiple languages and appreciate new experiences. They are confident and strong.

The military is its own culture and military kids are definitely their own sub-culture. It’s hard for some people to wrap their brains around what we were — for most of us — born into. Even military parents dont really understand what it’s like for BRATS. We silently serve in our own way, we move to different countries, schools without a choice. To military kids everywhere: You have grown up really, like no one else. That is your strength.
