Hartford, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - Hartford's mayor is going under the knife.

In a statement, Mayor Luke Bronin says he'll be undergoing laparoscopic abdominal surgery to remove his colon to treat ulcerative colitis on Saturday.
Bronin says he's had the condition for years.
He spent several days in the hospital last year when the condition flared up.
Bronin will spend between five-and- seven days in the hospital after surgery, then continue recovery at home for about two weeks.
A second surgery two months or so thereafter will require a shorter recovery.
Bronin says recent flare ups have been more severe.
In his absence, the city's chief operating officer Thea Montanez will oversee management of daily operations.
Bronin says he will be in regular communication while he's away from the office.
