Man, 84, charged in Torrington bank robbery

Torrington, Conn./WTIC Radio - Police in Torrington are charging an 84-year-old man after they say he robbed a city bank on Wednesday.

Under arrest is James Thompson of Avon.

It was around 10:00 a.m. that officers say Thompson parked his Cadillac in an nearby lot and walked to the Litchfield Bancorp on East Main Street.

Once inside, Thompson allegeldy showed a gun and demanded cash.

Police say he was spotted walking slowly to and from the bank on surveillance video.

He made off with an undisclosed amount of money, according to police.

According to detectives, Thompson told them he had fallen on hard times due to the economy which forced him to commit the hold up.

He is charged with robbery and larceny.

Bond was set at $250,000 and he's due in court later today.
