Torrington man faces Hate Crimes charge

Torrington, Conn. (WTIC Radio)-A city man faces Hate Crime, Arson and other charges for admitting to setting a vehicle on fire, Torrington Police said.

According to police,  officers responded to East Pearl Street this morning around 3:25,  informed by a witness of someone igniting a fire by the 2022 Chevy Equinox's fuel tank compartment.  Police said the car sustained heavy damage.

Police determined Samuel Vandeusen, 22, confessed, because he  didn't like or agree with the owner's ideologies. Vandeusen said he disliked the Mormon faith.

Vandeusen faces third-degree Arson, Criminal Mischief, Breach of Peace and Deprivation of Rights charges.
He appears in court today. His bond is $250,000.
