In November 2020, Linda Tutt High School in Sanger, Texas created a grocery store for students in an unused art room. Students could earn "points" to shop with at the store by getting good grades, helping out with school maintenance, or showing kindness to others.
Now, the school is opening up their grocery store to the larger community within their school district. Families are assigned a certain number of "points" per family member. They turn in a grocery list to the students working at the store, and the students gather and deliver their groceries curbside.
High school principal Anthony Love says that the store has been able to serve 130 families in the community so far.
The grocery store doesn't just help out food-insecure individuals and families, it also serves as an opportunity for the students who work at the shop to learn valuable on-the-job-skills.
