But what if they played right now -- who would win?
After seeing Michigan State notch a 28-7 win over Tulsa Friday night and Michigan's 40-21 victory against Middle Tennessee State Saturday, Caputo offers his thoughts on how the Spartans and Wolverines stack up early on in the season:
Both teams had their bright spots in their season-openers. MSU's defense looks to be in for another impressive campaign, while the Wolverines' new offensive system under coordinator Josh Gattis flashed signs of great potential, despite some expected growing pains.
But the biggest question mark for the Spartans was glaringly obvious -- the offense struggled yet again.
"The Spartans will probably be in every game that they're at, but it's unbalanced. Their offense is so bad and there was no indication Friday night in any way, shape or form that it's any better than last year, when it was really, really awful," Caputo said.
Caputo says as of right now, he'd pick the Wolverines over the Spartans, especially considering MSU's offensive woes.
