DETROIT (97.1The Ticket) -- Looking to keep pace in the race at the top of the Horizon League standings, the Detroit Mercy basketball team tripped up on Saturday.

The Titans (9-14, 6-5) held a 69-65 lead over Youngstown State with a little more than 2:00 to play, when Titans assistant coach Eric Devendorf aided the opponents with a spur-of-the-moment decision that came back to haunt his team.

Devendorf, a Bay City, Mich., native and former Syracuse star, picked up a shoe that Titans player Derrien King lost near their own hoop and hurled it to the other end of the floor. He was promptly hit with a two-shot technical.

The Penguins' Darius Quisenberry hit both free throws and then scored on the ensuing possession to take the lead.

Detroit pulled ahead by hitting one of two free throws, but Devin Morgan hit a go-ahead corner 3-pointer with 13 seconds left to put YSU back in front.

UDM's Antoine Davis, second in scoring average in the country (27.1 PPG), missed a shot as time expired and the Titans fell 72-70, taking their fourth loss in five games after starting Horizon League play 5-1.

Davis, who played all 40 minutes, finished with 23 points and hit 4-of-10 3-pointers.

Detroit now tips off a stretch of five straight road games, beginning with a trip to first-place Northern Kentucky on Thursday.
