DETROIT (97.1 The Ticket) -- History was made inside Calihan Hall Thursday night, as Detroit Mercy freshman Antoine Davis surpassed Stephen Curry's record for most 3-pointers by a freshman in NCAA history during an 87-85 win over IUPUI.
Davis tied Curry's mark of 122, which he set at Davidson College during the 2006-07 season, less than four minutes into the game and broke it three minutes into the second half.

Davis went on to hit two more long balls on the night, finishing with 20 points on 4-of-12 from 3-point range.

Oklahoma's Trae Young gave chase to Curry's record last season, but fell short at 118 3's. Curry went on to set the all-time single-season record a year later with 168, as his Wildcats advanced all the way to the Elite 8 as a 10-seed before falling to eventual national champion Kansas.

Curry played in 34 games his freshman season, while it took Davis just 29 games to break the record, though Davis has taken more than 20 more attempts than Curry, who reached that mark on 299 attempts.

Davis entered Thursday's game shooting 38.8 percent (121-of-312) through 28 games. He also came in averaging 26.3 points per game, which ranks third in the country, behind only Campbell's Chris Clemons (30.1 PPG) and Hofstra's Justin Wright-Foreman (26.6).

Davis, the son of head coach Mike Davis -- who led Indiana University to an appearance in the 2002 national championship game -- has been garnering NBA attention with his hot shooting all season. He told 97.1 The Ticket's Tony Ortiz back in January that he's thought about the next level, but he's just focused on this season.

"I mean, it’s a thought, but I feel like I’m not even there yet honestly. Despite the numbers and stuff like that, I’d love to just stick around and just win for the program," Davis said.

Detroit Mercy (11-18) wraps up the regular season Saturday afternoon at home against UIC before getting ready for the Horizon League Tournament. The Titans have clinched a spot in the conference tournament and depending on results this weekend, could conceivably play metro Detroit rival Oakland University in the first round, which is set to be held on the campuses of higher-seeded teams, before the semifinals and championship will be played at Little Caesars Arena.
