Martelli, 64, was fired by St. Joseph's in March after 34 years with the program and 24 years as head coach. He posted a career record of 444-328 and led the Hawks to seven NCAA tournament appearances.

He was a four-time Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and was named Naismith Coach of the Year in 2004 when St. Joseph's reached No. 1 in the AP Poll for the first time in school history and finished with a record of 30-2. That team featured three NBA players in Jameer Nelson, Delonte West and Dwayne Jones

Howard, who is being introduced by Michigan on Thursday, is in the process of replacing assistant coaches Luke Yaklich and DeAndre Haynes.

Yaklich left to reportedly take a job with Shaka Smart at Texas. Haynes announced Thursday morning that he is moving on as well.

Fellow assistant Saddi Washington will reportedly stay on Howard's staff, along with strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson.
