The first wave of NFL free agency is over, and a second one will follow this week. A number of big names remain available, a few of whom could interest the Lions.
Let's run through five free agents who make sense for the Lions.
Either in free agency or the draft, Detroit will surely add another running back. The latter is more appealing, but Hyde could pique the Lions' interest if they opt for the former. He's coming off an 1,000-yard season in Houston -- the first of his career -- and still has plenty of tread on the tires. The Lions prefer a timeshare in the backfield, and Hyde, a physical runner, could form a dangerous duo with Kerryon Johnson. He turns 30 in September.
The Lions have already added three ex-Patriots to the defense this offseason in Jamie Collins, Duron Harmon and Danny Shelton. Why not make it four? Ryan, who came into his own under Matt Patricia in New England before moving to the Titans, could team up with recent signee Desmond Trufant to help the Lions' secondary offset the loss of Darius Slay. He ranked third in the NFL with 18 passes defended last season.
While he won't garner the kind of attention -- or money -- as fellow Broncos pass rusher Shelby Harris, Wolfe is coming off one of the best seasons of his career. He had 7.0 sacks in 12 games in 2019, plus eight tackles for loss and 12 QB hits. The Lions have rebuilt the interior of their defensive line, but need more playmakers on the edge. Wolfe, 30, could be a cost-effective complement to Trey Flowers.
Cut by the Vikings last week, Kline is one of the better offensive linemen left on the market. And he's spent most of his career at right guard, where the Lions happen to have a hole after letting Graham Glasgow leave town. He's a good run blocker, which would give Detroit two of them on the right side of the line along with newcomer Halapoulivaati Vaitai. By the way: Kline started his career in New England.
