T.J. Lang's time with the Lions has come to an end.

The team announced on Friday that it has released the veteran guard, who had one year remaining on his contract.

By doing so, the Lions save about $8.8 million against the cap in 2019. He was due a $500,000 roster bonus on March 13.

Though one of the team's best offensive linemen when healthy, Lang battled multiple injuries the past two seasons, including the sixth documented concussion of his career in 2018.

He said at the end of last season that wanted to keep playing and would be willing to take a pay cut to do so, but the Lions are moving on. The guard position now becomes one of need heading into free agency and the draft.

Lang, who signed a three-year, $28.5 million contract with Detroit in 2017, was set to carry a cap hit of $11.5 million in 2019.

In a statement from general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia, the Lions thanked Lang for his time in Detroit. He was a respected figure in the locker room and a hard-nosed player on the field.

"He represented everything you could want from a football player and team captain. We all publicly saw him perform on the field at a very high level, but what was seen in the building every day was a player who had great leadership, professionalism and passion for the game of football.

"It meant a lot for T.J. to play in his home city and we have the utmost respect for him as a man. We wish T.J. and his family all the best in the future."

At this point, it's most likely that Lang, 31, calls it a career.
