Lions GM Bob Quinn wants more playmakers on defense. Tyrann Mathieu is testing free agency.
To no surprise, Detroit looks prepared to make a move. And it will have to be a big one, considering Mathieu reportedly already has a long-term deal worth more than $9.5 million per year on the table from the Texans.
What's more, the Lions won't be the only team bidding. The Chiefs are reportedly among those interested in Mathieu as well.
Texans' negotiating priority remains Tyrann Mathieu, whom they've offered a multi-year contract extension. RIch safety market, so plenty of fallback options if he signs elsewhere. Hearing Ravens aren't involved on him. Lions have interest and Chiefs, among others.
— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 11, 2019In 16 games last season with the Texans after he was released by the Cardinals, Mathieu recorded two interceptions, eight passes defended and 89 tackles. He played both strong safety and slot corner.
The 26-year-old is one of several big-time safeties on a free agent market that also features the likes of Landon Collins, Earl Thomas, Lamarcus Joyner, Adrian Amos and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.
The Lions have holes in the defensive backfield after releasing safety Glover Quin and cornberback Nevin Lawson this offseason. If they plan to start shoring things up by signing Mathieu, they better be prepared to spend.
Teams can officially sign free agents when the new league year begins March 13.
