MLB Players Say Miggy Still One Of Game's 'Most Intimidating' Hitters

Say what you will about Miguel Cabrera's age, health and declining numbers. He's still one of the most feared hitters in baseball.

That's according to a poll of MLB players, conducted by The Athletic. The poll canvassed about a third of the league overall, including players from all 30 teams.

One of the questions asked: Who is the most intimidating hitter in the game?

Mike Trout unsurprisingly led the way, followed by Aaron Judge, former Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez and Giancarlo Stanton. Cabrera was one of only seven other players to garner multiple votes.

The 35-year-old is coming off a season in which he played in just 38 games due to a ruptured biceps. He posted career lows the season before that. He hasn't been to an All-Star Game since 2016, the last time he stayed healthy for the whole year.

But he's a two-time MVP and a Triple Crown winner, and he's on a mission this season to prove he's got lots of gas left in the tank. Don't be surprised if he fulfills it.

When asked whether or not the DH should expand to the National League, one AL pitcher cracked, "You guys get it too, how about that? You get to face Miggy Cabrera." It was never such a pleasure, and it still isn't.

For what it's worth, Cabrera hit .340 with a team-high five home runs in 20 games in spring training.

Other notable results from the poll include mentions of Ron Gardenhire and Brad Ausmus. The former is popular around the league. The latter, maybe not so much.

When it came to which manager (aside from their own) players would most want to play for, Gardenhire received the ninth most votes. (Joe Maddon of the Cubs was the winner.)

When it came to the reverse question, Ausmus received the eighth most votes. (Gabe Kapler was the "winner.")

More:

  • Detroit tied for the fourth least enjoyable city to visit on road trips. (Cincinnati was voted No. 1.)
  • Bryce Harper was voted the most overrated player.
  • Anthony Rendon was voted the most underrated player.
  • Manny Machado was voted the dirtiest player.
  • Max Scherzer was voted the most intimidating pitcher.
