CHARLESTON, Ill. (97.1 The Ticket) -- Take notice, college basketball fans. Ja Morant is for real.

Many casual college basketball fans are probably unfamiliar with the 6-foot-3 sophomore guard for Murray State, but he is beginning to garner a lot of attention from NBA scouts.

Rightfully so. Morant ranks inside the top 15 in national scoring average (23.3 PPG) and first in assists (10.6 APG), while creating some memorable highlights along the way.

He added another one to his reel during his Racers' (83-61) win over Ohio Valley Conference foe Eastern Illinois on Thursday night, taking off from a step or two inside the free throw line, cocking it back and throwing it down.

Morant finished with 27 points, his ninth game this season with at least 25 . His season high was 38 against Alabama.

The Racers (14-2) may not play the stiffest of competition, but they put up very strong fights in their only two losses, which were both within two possessions and came on the road against SEC schools -- Alabama and then-No.7-ranked Auburn.

If Morant continues to dazzle, he could have his team shaping up to become an upset special come March. ESPN's latest Bracketology has the Racers projected as a No. 12 seed, while CBS has them as an 11.
Sports Illustrated ranked Morant as the No. 3 NBA Draft prospect earlier this month, while Yahoo Sports puts him fifth in the player of the year race.

Murray State has produced NBA talents such as Isaiah Canaan and Cameron Payne, but Morant has the potential to be a bigger name in the league than either of them.
