We've heard it for the past few years, and it's still true today: the Lions need more talent.
They were one of six teams this offseason without a single player in the NFL Top 100. And in a ranking by ESPN of every team's talent under the age of 25, the Lions came in at No. 26. They were No. 18 on the same list a year ago.
This year, the Lions only have two 'blue-chip' players: Frank Ragnow and Jeff Okudah. Notable omissions include T.J. Hockenson, 23; Kerryon Johnson, 23; and D'Andre Swift, 21.
ESPN did mention Hockenson and Swift as 'promising young starters.'
"An ankle injury cut Hockenson's rookie season short, but his pre-draft promise offers hope that he can become a plus contributor as both a receiver and a blocker. Ironically, Swift does not possess the top-end speed to score from anywhere on the field, but he is quick and decisive and provides a three-down ability that the Lions have lacked."
ESPN Says Lions Had One Of Worst Offseasons In NFL
On the defensive side of the ball, ESPN highlighted Okudah and 2020 third-round pick Julian Okwara.
"Okudah has the ideal physical traits to become a shutdown corner, and if his brother and Lions teammate Romeo is any indication, Okwara could quickly add the size and strength to become a prototypical NFL pass-rusher."
If the likes of Jahlani Tavai, Will Harris and D'Shawn Hand also make contributions in 2020, ESPN says the Lions are 'poised for rapid defensive improvements.' That would be welcome a year after they surrendered more than 400 yards per game.
Despite its overall ranking, Detroit stacks up well with the rest of the NFC North. Only the Packers (No. 22) are ranked higher.
