They waited longer than expected, but the Lions drafted a defensive tackle Saturday in Utah's John Penisini, No. 197 overall.

At 6'1, 333 lbs., Penisini has the size Matt Patricia is looking for up front. He'll add some girth to a revamped D-line in Detroit that features fellow newcomers Danny Shelton, Nick Williams and third-round pick Julian Okwara.

He had identical numbers each of his last two seasons at Utah: 38 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. He was second-team All-Pac 12 both years.

"He has massive, violent hands and quality upper-body strength but will find the going much tougher against bigger, stronger competition," writes NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein. "He has lower body strength to push into the pocket once he gets to an edge, but he doesn't offer much rush value."
