With a few hours to go before the start of the draft, the Lions are ready to trade down from No. 3.
That doesn't come as a surprise. It's become increasingly clear that they'd like to move back a couple spots and take Jeffrey Okudah -- with Auburn's Derrick Brown and Clemson's Isaiah Simmons possibilities as well.
The twist is where they might be landing.
The Lions "have made plans" to draft at either No. 5 or No. 4 overall, according to the Miami Herald. While the Dolphins have been a likely trade partner from the start, the Giants are new to the picture.
Per the Miami Herald, "The Lions have a degree of confidence they will be able to trade their pick to either the New York Giants or Miami Dolphins at some point either before the draft or while they're on the clock."
Bob Quinn said he'd like to have deal done by Thursday afternoon, rather than during the draft. And the Lions have "been engaged with multiple teams" over the last 24 hours, according to Ian Rapoport.
More than ever, teams will try to work out trades before the NFL Draft begins just in case. To that point: The #Lions have been engaged with multiple teams on potentially trading out of the No. 3 spot, sources say. Things have heated up over the last 24 hours. --
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 23, 2020The Giants entered the mix when it surfaced Wednesday that the Dolphins might be eyeing an offensive tackle at No. 3. New York is said to be targeting a tackle at No. 4, so trading up would ensure it gets its choice of Iowa's Tristan Wirfs, Alabama's Jedrick Wills Jr., Georgia's Andrew Thomas and Louisville's Mekhi Becton.
The possibility remains of the Dolphins trading up for a quarterback.
Of the two teams, Miami is better equipped to make a trade. It has two extra first-rounders and an extra second, whereas the Giants only have one pick in each of the first three rounds. If the Lions are eyeing a second-rounder, as seems to be the case, New York might not be inclined to pull the trigger.
The sleeper team here is the Chargers, at No. 6. They're targeting a quarterback as well, and could just as soon jump to No. 3 for either Justin Herbert or Tua Tagovailoa.
Quinn will wait as long as he can to make his move. It increases the possibility of a bidding war between the Dolphins and Giants, allows the Chargers to enter the race if they're so inclined, and keeps all options on the table at No. 3 -- which could prove crucial if the Redskins trade down from No. 2.
