The Lions already have one big hole on their offensive line, and they just created another.

The team released right tackle Rick Wagner on Friday, a few days before the start of free agency.

Wagner was due to carry an $11.9 million cap hit each of the next two seasons. By letting him go, the Lions will save $6.1 million against the cap in 2020 and $9 million in 2021, according to Spotrac.

Of course, they'll also have to find a new right tackle.

It's a sudden move by Detroit, but not all that surprising. Wagner's been one of the highest-paid right tackles in the NFL the past three seasons and hasn't often played like it. It doesn't reflect well on general manager Bob Quinn, who handed Wagner a five-year, $47.5 million deal in 2017.

In addition to Wagner, the Lions will need to find a replacement for guard Graham Glasgow this offseason. Glasgow, a pending free agent, indicated this week he doesn't expect the team to bring him back

Detroit now has over $50 million of cap space, although a good deal of that is likely allocated for extensions for left tackle Taylor Decker and center Frank Ragnow, not to mention receiver Kenny Golladay.
