Lions Add Intrigue At Running Back By Signing Jonathan Williams

The Lions have added a new face to the running backs room to kick off training camp.

The team announced the signing of Jonathan Williams shortly before its first padded practice of camp Monday morning. Detroit waived fellow RB Wes Hills to make room on the roster.

Williams, 26, rushed for 235 yards and one touchdown while averaging nearly 5.0 yards per carry in nine games for the Colts last season. He had back-to-back 100-yard games in November against the Jaguars and Texans.

The Lions have been kicking the tires on running backs recently, also bringing in C.J. Prosise for a workout last week. Williams will join a deep backfield headlined by Kerryon Johnson and rookie D'Andre Swift.

Bo Scarbrough, Ty Johnson and rookie Jason Huntley will vie for playing time as well.

Williams, a fifth-round pick out of Arkansas in 2016, began his career with the Bills. He's also made stops with the Broncos and the Saints. He's averaged 4.2 yards per carry over 23 career games.
