With a new coach typically comes a new staff. And Mel Tucker is going entirely new in his first year at Michigan State.
Five of the coaches being let go by Tucker had been on Dantonio's staff for at least seven years, including defensive coordinator Mike Tressel, quarterbacks coach Dave Warner, and tight ends coach Mark Staten. Tressel, Warner and Staten came to MSU with Dantonio from Cincinnati in 2007.
Offensive coordinator Brad Salem, offensive line coach Jim Bollman, wide receivers coach Don Treadwell, defensive backs coach Paul Haynes and defensive ends coach Chuck Bullough also won't be retained.
Defensive tackles coach Ron Burton and assistant defensive backs coach Terrence Samuel have moved on as well.
Part of Tucker's $30 million contract with MSU, which he signed Wednesday, includes an annual salary pool of $6 million for his 10 assistants. Tucker has yet to make any hires, although his first could be his biggest.
The highest-paid assistant on Dantonio's staff last year was Tressel, who made $667,385. Dantonio had about $4.9 million to spend on his assistants.
