MHSAA Preparing Spectator Plans For State Tournaments, Events Amid Virus Concerns

97.1 The Ticket -- The Michigan High School Athletic Association says al remaining winter postseason tournaments, including boy's and girl's basketball, will go on as scheduled, but the association is planning on restricting spectator attendance amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The boys swimming and diving finals are being held at Oakland University (Divisions 1 and 3) and the Holland Aquatic Center (Division 2) this weekend, but will be conducted with no on-site spectators. All events this weekend will be streamed live on MHSAA.tv.

It's not clear whether the policy will allow for immediate family members and school support staff, as the NCAA is allowing at its upcoming tournaments.
The MHSAA says specific plans for this multiple events this weekend will be announced by 10 a.m. Thursday. Those events include:

  • Ice Hockey semifinals and finals -- Thursday-Saturday at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth 
  • Girls Gymnastics finals -- Friday and Saturday in Rockford
  • Girls Basketball regionals -- Thursday at various sites
  • Boys Basketball districts -- Thursday-Saturday at various sites.

The MHSAA will also announce spectator plans for next week's girls basketball quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, as well as the final two weeks of the boys tournament by Monday.

Boys district games went on as planned Wednesday night.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the first two cases of coronavirus in Michigan Tuesday night and on Wednesday advised against any events or gatherings with more than 100 people.
