Big things were expected of Michigan football's 2017 recruiting class. The results continue to disappoint.
Defensive back Jaylen Kelly-Powell is the latest player to defect. The Detroit native entered the transfer portal this week, according to 247 Sports.
Ranked No. 5 in the nation, Michigan's 2017 class included 16 four- or five-star recruits. Three years later, only five remain.
Two players did leave early for the NFL Draft in Donovan Peoples-Jones and Cesar Ruiz, but even Peoples-Jones, Michigan's top recruit and the No. 1 receiver in the country, was a letdown.
The other nine, including Kelly-Powell, chose to transfer.
A graduate of Cass Tech, Kelly-Powell appeared in 10 games as a freshman, mostly on special teams. But he played in just 10 games over the next two years, and only three in 2019.
He has entered the portal as a graduate transfer, per 247 Sports, and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
