The story behind Zavier Simpson's recent suspension may have come to light Thursday.
The incident occurred at 3:03 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, about 12 hours after Michigan's loss to Illinois. Juwan Howard announced a one-game suspension for Simpson the next day.
According to MLive, Simpson initially denied that he was the driver of the vehicle, before admitting to the truth after further investigation. He was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.
Authorities said they did not smell any intoxicant on Simpson's breath, according to the report. He told police he crashed due to icy conditions. He was issued a traffic citation for driving too fast for the road conditions.
Howard has not revealed the cause for Simpson's investigation, other than to say, “We have team rules. Unfortunately, he broke one of them. You have repercussions and consequences you have to pay when you break team rules.”
Michigan beat Nebraska in Simpson's absence. He was reinstated prior to the Wolverines' win over Rutgers last weekend.
