In the end, it wasn't meant to be for Joshua Langford.

The senior shooting guard for Michigan State was ruled out for the season on Thursday, Tom Izzo announced.

Langford was hoping to play this season after missing most of last year with a foot injury. But he suffered a setback prior to the start of the season and was ruled out at the time until January.

And after another setback, Langford needed foot surgery, Izzo said. It's his second foot surgery in the past year. It's unclear if he'll try to return next season.

Michigan State was counting on Langford to carry some of the load on offense this year. He averaged 15.0 points and shot over 40 percent from three in 13 games last year. The prized recruit in 2016 put up 9.3 points per game over his first two seasons.

Sophomore Gabe Brown will likely continue to see big minutes in Langford's absence.

Forced to the sidelines, Langford has embraced the role of a coach. And that will be his role for the rest of this season, and maybe his Michigan State career.
