Spencer Torkelson is officially a Tiger.
Detroit signed the No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft to a record-breaking deal Tuesday, according to Jim Callis of MLB.com. Torkelson will get $8,416,300, the highest bonus awarded to a player in the history of the draft.
Callis also notes it's the first time the No. 1 pick has received full slot value since MLB began penalizing teams in 2012 for excessive spending in the draft.
No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson signs with @Tigers for $8,416,300 (slot value = 8,415,300). New @MLBDraft bonus record, also first No. 1 overall pick to get or top slot value in bonus-pool era. Perhaps the best all-around offensive talent to come out of Draft in 20 years.
