You can end the debate over Spencer Torkelson and Austin Martin.
It won't be official until Wednesday night, but it appears the Tigers are taking Torkelson with the first overall pick in the draft.
The two parties have already begun working on a contract, according to former Detroit News columnist Lynn Henning.
Torkelson-Tigers contract expected to be inked with no serious hang-ups. The usual finer-line jostling and detailing are yet to be completed. But no impasse. Deal done sooner than later.
— Lynn G. Henning (@Lynn_Henning) June 9, 2020In a follow-up tweet, Henning confirmed that Torkelson to the Tigers is a done deal.
It's no surprise. The Tigers have long been linked to the slugger from Arizona State. In fact, Torkelson could play in Detroit as soon as this season. He's considered the most advanced bat in the draft, with power that should translate quickly to the big leagues.
There's a belief that Martin, the third baseman/center fielder from Vanderbilt, has a higher ceiling, but Torkelson is said to be the safer pick. The Tigers want badly for high-impact bats, and Torkelson is one they can build around moving forward.
He projects to play first base or left field in the majors.
