Jake Rogers has been put on notice.

The Tigers selected Ohio State catcher Dillon Dingler with the first pick in the second round of the draft, adding a potential cornerstone to the organization.

Dingler, 6'3, 220 lbs., swings a big bat and has a strong arm behind the plate. It might not be long before he replaces Rogers in Detroit's long-term plans at catcher.

"I love it," former Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd said on MLB Network. "They got their catcher of the future. This might be one of the better athletic catchers in this year's draft. I'm a big believer in athletic catchers."

Dingler was a center fielder when he arrived at Ohio State, but soon made the switch to catcher. He hit .291 with an .816 OPS in his sophomore season and was hitting .340 with a 1.164 OPS through 13 games this year.

"It shows you with that size, a lot of raw power," said O'Down. "I really believe this guy has a chance to be one of those cornerstones. It's a very durable body, he moves well behind the plate, there's just a lot to like about him.

"My comparison for him was a little more athletic version of (Diamondbacks catcher) Carson Kelly, who's one of the next stars at the big-league level from a catching standpoint. The Tigers have done very well so far."

Kelly hit 18 homers and posted an .826 OPS last year in his first big-league season. In time, the Tigers will happily take the same from Dingler.
