NFL Exec: 'We Could Crown Lions Super Bowl Champs This Year'

If there was ever a year for the Lions to make a run at the Super Bowl, maybe this is the one. The unknowns presented by the coronavirus could make for some unlikely outcomes.

Take it from this top NFL executive, who told Peter King in his Monday column, "We could crown the Detroit Lions Super Bowl champs this year."

Why?

"Because this year's going to be about who handles COVID the best," he said. "Suppose the Lions have zero people quarantined this year, while other teams have important players out for a while."

King adds, "It's like what Kyle Rudolph of the Vikings told me Saturday too: The team that handles the peripheral stuff best will have a huge edge, because this year the peripheral stuff will be as important as the on-field stuff."

OK. So what this exec's saying is that every team has a chance this season -- even the Lions. That is, the Lions wouldn't have a chance otherwise.

But that should be encouraging for Detroit, which is coming off a three-win season. And it should be encouraging for Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn, who need better results this year to keep their jobs.

Patricia was pleased with what he saw from his team during the virtual offseason. With training camp set to start at the end of this month, we'll get our first glimpse at what might be in store for Detroit in 2020.

Super Bowl LV?

Why not.
