Pat Caputo: Detroit Sports Hit Rock Bottom

The Tigers have lost nine straight games. The Lions will begin the season without fans at Ford Field.

The Red Wings and Pistons had the worst possible outcome in their respective draft lotteries. Neither has played since March and won't again until December - at the earliest.


The Big Ten postponed its football season.

If there is any good news about the state of sports in Detroit and Michigan, it's there is nowhere to go but up.

In this time of the pandemic, there are many more pressing issues than sports.

Yet, down the chain, to the sports realm in this town, this has to be rock bottom.

Normally, the good part about bad teams is getting to see glimpses of the future. At least we saw that when Casey Mize was impressive during his MLB debut.

At the Tigers' Summer Camp, Riley Greene was was very good, too. There was a lot of buzz from the Tigers' draft, especially about first overall selection Spencer Torkelson.

Normally, preseason football draws a collective yawn. Yet, it would have been widely anticipated how Lions' early draft picks Jeff Okudah and D'Andre Swift performed.

I love drafts. Not just the NFL. All sports. Normally I am not joined in such enthusiasm for the other sports. Yet, it would have been wonderful if the Red Wings got the shot at Alexis Lafreniere they earned organically as the worst team in the NHL.

The upside will be the debate about what to do at fourth overall, except, unlike the NFL Draft, fans and most of the media, aren't well-versed in NHL Draft prospects. It's not really a thing - except for the hockey geeks.

The NBA Draft presents somewhat more well-known talent, but not necessarily when it comes to the European players. Remember what the Pistons sold us about Darko…

In regard to college football, the big decision is whether to watch the SEC, Big 12 and ACC, and if so, at what level of enthusiasm.

Is it OK to adopt an college football team to follow for a season? It doesn't seem feasible. More like it will painful, especially on the first crisp, fall day when the leaves are charging color.

We've already had our fill of past glory during the earliest portion of the pandemic. Those championships were great to replay, but it's a played out jam at this point.

So all we can do is close our eyes and see the future. Dylan Larkin as the Red Wings' captain glove-bumping Mo Seider after an overtime goal.

And we've got the Lions, hopefully, starting in September. Perhaps this is the year, when it isn't exactly expected, the Lions pull it together.

Hey, you never know.

Keep the faith, because at this point, it's pretty much all we've got.
