NEW YORK (97.1 The Ticket) -- The Pistons opted to go with some international flavor with the 15th overall pick in Thursday's NBA Draft.
French, to be exact.
The Pistons selected Sekou Doumbouya, a 6-foot-9 forward out of France. Reports on Doumbouya say he has the ability to both stretch and run the floor offensively, while he's solid defensively, particularly in switching and closing out. While Detroit has been in search of help on the wings offensively, they are also in need of help defensively.
While many analysts say Doumbouya has great potential, it is raw. He appears to be a development project who could factor into the future of the franchise, moreso than make an immediate impact.
Doumbouya, the youngest player in the draft at 18 years old (Dec. 23, 2000), is the first international player the Pistons have drafted since taking Jonas Jerebko in the second round of the 2009 draft.
Many mock drafts projected Doumbouya in the top 10 of the draft, and no lower than the 11th.
Doumbouya's coach at Limoges CSP, Kyle Milling, says the youngster is very versatile, something the Pistons are looking for.
"I like guys who are versatile and can do a lot of differnt things, someone who fits modern-day basetball," Milling said in a press release. "Does he really have a position? These days, a lot of guys can play multiple positions. Sekou is very raw, but he can defend 1, 2, 3 and 4. He can play the 3, play the 4. He can do a lot of different things."
The Pistons also hold the 30th overall pick, marking the first time they've had two first-round picks since 2007.
